Our Weekly Topic this Summer…
A combination of classic & modern!

Each meeting has Three Parts:

1. We begin each meeting with group chanting of the meditation on Chenrezig, Bodhisattva of Compassion. Texts provided. Followed by:

2. Guide to the Bodhisattva’s Way of Life

Led by Lama Yeshe Palmo, we will explore in depth the famous and universally loved poem for daily living, Guide to the Bodhisattva’s Way of Life, that has inspired many generations of Buddhists and non-Buddhists since it was first composed in the 8th century by the famous Indian Buddhist master Shantideva. A classic (yet always contemporary) set of methods for cultivating love, compassion, and the full awakening of Buddhahood using both meditation and our daily life experiences.

Our study is based mainly on two books: Guide to the Bodhisattva’s Way of Life by Shantideva and Nectar of Manjushri’s Speeach as the commentary.

BUDDHAWhat Is Buddhism? at the
Nantucket Community School

Buddhism has proved to be hugely popular in the west, yet it is not a traditional religion or even merely a philosophy. What is it then? And how does one practice it? In this three-session course, we will be exploring what it was the Buddha experienced in gaining Enlightenment, and how it is relevant to our lives today. In particular, we’ll be looking at: the Buddha, the founder
of Buddhism; the Dharma, the philosophy teaching of the Buddha, in particular in terms of ethics, meditation, and wisdom; and the Sangha, the Buddhist community, both historically and as a lived experience today.
The course is open to everyone. No experience of meditation is necessary. While an interest in Buddhism is assumed, you don’t have to be a Buddhist to take the course.
